Learning is at the heart of Jewish life at Agudas Achim. Our community values intellectual curiosity and welcomes new ideas, grounded in a spirit that is both friendly and open. Thoughtful exploration, lively conversation, and respectful debate are not just encouraged here—they are essential expressions of Jewish learning.
Throughout the year, we offer learning opportunities taught by our rabbi, lay leaders, and visiting scholars. Some sessions feature congregants sharing professional or artistic expertise; others bring in local and national authors or invite scholars-in-residence to teach. Our programs range widely, moving from traditional text study and theology to Jewish history, art, music, literature, and film. Together, they reflect the richness and diversity of Jewish expression.
Many Adult Education programs take place in our social hall and include a luncheon or refreshments, creating time and space for learning to unfold alongside conversation and community. Other offerings happen beyond our walls, such as the rabbi’s Big Ideas in Jewish Books Club, which meets downtown at the Iowa City Public Library and is open to the public.
If you are considering Conversion or are part of an Interfaith family we welcome you and offer many resources detailed at the above links – such as our conversion FAQ and Resources page, and our Introduction to Judaism course.
