Lifelong Learning

Learning is at the heart of Jewish life at Agudas Achim. Our community values intellectual curiosity and welcomes new ideas, grounded in a spirit that is both friendly and open. Thoughtful exploration, lively conversation, and respectful debate are not just encouraged here—they are essential expressions of Jewish learning.

Throughout the year, we offer learning opportunities taught by our rabbi, lay leaders, and visiting scholars. Some sessions feature congregants sharing professional or artistic expertise; others bring in local and national authors or invite scholars-in-residence to teach. Our programs range widely, moving from traditional text study and theology to Jewish history, art, music, literature, and film. Together, they reflect the richness and diversity of Jewish expression.

Many Adult Education programs take place in our social hall and include a luncheon or refreshments, creating time and space for learning to unfold alongside conversation and community. Other offerings happen beyond our walls, such as the rabbi’s Big Ideas in Jewish Books Club,” which meets downtown at the Iowa City Public Library and is open to the public.

Families seeking information about children and youth learning should visit the Religious School / Children tab. Adults who want to explore Judaism more deeply—including those considering conversion or who are part of an interfaith family—will find details about our Introduction to Judaism course under the Conversion & Interfaith tab.
