Conversion to Judaism FAQ

FAQ: Conversion to Judaism at Agudas Achim

Is your synagogue welcoming to people exploring Judaism?
Curiosity, questions, and exploration are always welcome here. You do not need to be Jewish—or planning to become Jewish—to participate in our community. Our community is enriched by non-Jews who are part of synagogue life.

Is conversion expected?
The Jewish tradition has welcomed and celebrated converts for thousands of years, but conversion has always been entirely voluntary, individual and personal. Jewish wisdom teaches at every righteous person can find their own path to the Divine, with or without conversion, but supports and welcomes those who meet the requirements of conversion and embrace that choice. In addition, members of interfaith families often engage meaningfully in Jewish life without converting, and at Agudas Achim we seek to create an embracing environment for them. We encourage you to explore on your own terms whether Judaism is for you, without any pressure.

What kind of conversions do you offer?
Our synagogue offers both Reform and Conservative conversions. We run one shared Introduction to Judaism class, and the rabbi will guide you through the requirements specific to each movement if and when you choose a path. Please see the Introduction to Judaism tab for more information about the class.

What does the process look like?
Our Introduction to Judaism course lasts about 11 months and includes (for those on the conversion track):

  • Structured learning about Jewish life, practice, and values
  • Participation in community and worship
  • A capstone reflective essay
  • Appearing before a Beit Din (a rabbinic court of three) at the conclusion of the process

Can I decide not to convert after starting?
Beginning the class or the conversation does not commit you to conversion and the class is free. Choosing not to convert is a valid and honored outcome.

I’m interested—what’s my next step?
We encourage you to reach out to the rabbi for an informal, pressure-free conversation. You can also explore our conversion resource list here.
