From The President

Welcome to the Sisterhood of Agudas Achim Congregation of Iowa City. The members of our Sisterhood are dedicated to strengthening the bond of unity among Jewish women. As Sisterhood members, we actively support the Congregation, Talmud Torah (religious school), and Youth Programs of Agudas Achim. We achieve these goals through a variety of activities and programs that are also designed to promote personal growth and friendship. We welcome women into Sisterhood from the entire Iowa City/Coralville and surrounding Jewish community.  Our membership is composed of women from all branches of Judaism and from all levels of observance.  Each of us has a unique role to play in promoting the ideals of Judaism.  Each of us has the capabilities to learn, to teach, and to help others.  Opportunities exist for everyone to participate in Sisterhood as much or as little as your time and interests will allow.  As a group of women from diverse backgrounds, but with shared values, we have a responsibility to enrich and strengthen the community around us.  Our commitment to;..."to serve the cause of Judaism by strengthening the bond of unity among Jewish women...” Sisterhood is a legacy that we can leave to future generations.

We want to take this opportunity to thank the current members of Sisterhood.  Your commitment and dedication are greatly appreciated.  If you are new to Sisterhood, we welcome you and invite you to participate in the variety of social, educational and spiritual programs that we have to offer.  We look forward to getting to know you.

Religious Enrichment

Sisterhood promotes the study and practice of Judaism through participation in Synagogue activities and by encouraging religious observance in the home. Our goal is to make Judaism meaningful, dynamic, and vital in the life of the Sisterhood member and her family. We are jointly affiliated with both the Conservative and Reform movements. Whatever your own affiliation, Sisterhood provides each member the opportunity to become more informed about Judaism. We help to enrich the understanding of Shabbat through participation in our annual Sisterhood Shabbat services.

Personal Enrichment

Sisterhood enables our members to discover Jewish social contacts, fellowship, and a sense of belonging. Our major social events are the Fall Membership Meeting, the Goods and Services auction in the winter and the Mitzvah Fund Event in the spring. At the same time, Sisterhood allows each member to develop her individual potential by sharing her unique talents and skills. We encourage our members to come together in special interest groups which they are free to initiate, and which we are happy to promote. Such interest groups currently include book discussion, Mah Jongg, and Warm Up America (WUA). Gourmet cooking, crafts, exercise, bridge, and a playgroup for toddlers h
ave all been held in the past.

Community Enrichment

We keep our members informed of local social action issues and volunteer opportunities, and we encourage the giving and performing of Tzedakah. Our annual Mitzvah Fund Event raises funds for local charities. In recent years, proceeds have gone to the Iowa City School Children’s Aid Fund.
